1– Don’t pour grease down your drain
This is the number one cause for clogs in the kitchen. Over time, grease builds up on the walls of your drains, slowly reducing the amount of water than can drain.
Growing up, we’ve all heard at least one person say: “Run hot water for a minute after and you’ll be fine” or “Put dish liquid with it, it helps wash it down”.
They were wrong! We see the negative results every day. Over half of the service calls that we receive each day, are for clogged drains. And over half of those calls, are for a kitchen sink clog.
As the grease goes through your pipes, it’s cooling and sticking to the sides, reducing how much water can pass. And, not only is the drain flow restricted, grease acts as a magnet and attracts food particles that wash down your drains. Over time, water is simply not able to drain due to the excessive buildup.

BONUS TIP: Let the grease cool and then pour into an empty coffee can or a jar, put the lid on and toss in the trash. Keep extras on hand! It doesn’t take much space to store an empty coffee container or empty jar under your sink. Think – empty pickle jar from sandwich night last week, spaghetti sauce, mayonaise, applesauce…… you get the idea. The point is to rinse save a container or two so when it’s taco night, you are not tempted to pour the hamburger grease down the drain.

2- Food does not belong in your drain
Even though you may have a garbage disposal that helps to break down food particle sizes, food build up in your drains can still happen. (Especially if you’ve poured grease down your drain.)
Always use sink strainers. While you may be a family that practices “eating everything on your plate“, food particles remain. And when you rinse your dishes, those food particles will go down your drain.

3- Hair Loss
The number one clog issue in a bathroom is caused by hair.
A shower clog, stopped up bathtub or clogged sink is almost always related to trapped hair in the drain.
We lose 50-100 hairs each day according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Multiply that by the number of people in your home and well….. it adds up fast.
And, that does not begin to include the hair added from our fur babies’ baths!

4- Don’t flush that!
Here’s where we say, “Don’t use the whole roll!” or “Please don’t flush that _____“.
Before it can even see the drain, the huge amounts of toilet paper have to make it through the toilet first.
That S in the toilet base is the path your flush takes in order to reach your drain line.
Because clogs can also happen on the way to the drain, you need to be very aware of what you are flushing.
Baby wipes, diapers, personal wipes, paper towels, cigarette butts, cotton swabs, make-up remover pads and feminine hygiene products are a big NO.
The inevitable matchbox car, bath toy or barbie are seemingly unavoidable if you have young children in your home. Save our number now so you’ll be prepared 704-600-8350.

5- Utility Sinks have limits
Most homes have a utility sink in the laundry room. Utility sinks are true to their name in that they have so many uses due to their rugged build and size compared to a bathroom or kitchen sink. The list of uses is limitless:
- soaking
- cleaning larger household items
- watering plants
- washing muddy shoes
- rinsing painting supplies
- washing pets and more
Because utility sinks are so usable, they take a beating when it comes to what washes down the drain. Buildup can happen fast and clogs quickly follow. Using a tightly woven screen sink strainer will stop the larger pieces going down the drain.

6- Learn where your sewer line is located
Clogs can happen outside your home too! Your sewer line leaves your home and drains into either a main municipality sewer line or into your septic tank.
Knowing where your sewer line is located could save you hundreds, possibly even thousands of dollars.
There are many options to place the blame, but the bottom line is that many sewer lines have not been installed as deep as they should have been and it causes many unexpected and expensive problems.
If you are not sure where your sewer lines are, avoid driving heavy vehicles or dirt movers in your yard or you could potentially crush your lines, causing a cave in and ending with a sewer back up in your entire home.
Additionally, do not plant bushes or trees on your property until you are certain of the location of your sewer line. Roots chase water and can penetrate your sewer line. You’ll have no choice but to remove the bush or tree and replace a section of your sewer line.
If you are unsure of where your lines are or the condition of your plumbing, we offer full plumbing inspections. Our inspections include camera imaging of your lines which instills confidence in knowing the actual and real-time condition of your home’s plumbing.
